The benefi­ciary is the person nominated by the policy­holder to receive the benefit. In principle, any person can be nominated. The exception is only in cases of tax-privileged contracts (e.g. Riester and basic pensions), as the relevant tax regula­tions stipulate that only certain persons close to the policy­holder may be nominated.
